Name... Marshall

A name for a horse worker, or someone who works with horses. French Mar'echel as part of a name for a blacksmith/farrier.

From what I found the name Marshall derived from the French 'Mar'echel', also from a boat arriving from Ireland, by the name John Marshall. Due to the fact some of the Irish, talking no English, they used the name of the boat for their surname.

The Irish leaving the emerald isle trying to find a new life and fortune were sailing over the water hoping to find a better place to raise their families, at this time the French were finding new lands. When both met in Scotland the law at the time stated they could marry into each other, in doing so they had the opportunity to stay as part of the next generation of Celts.

Life was hard for the immigrants as they moved around the new land. They arrived East into Edinburgh and of course were not welcome, but found an area for Irish people called 'Little Ireland', so again they had to fight for their right to stay, at this time a father stood up and helped the incoming travellers. But they needed more than work as they needed to relax, so started a local football club. As the Irish started to win more games it was time to give the team a name to remind them of home, the name given to the team was Hibernian (Latin for Ireland), relating to the Irish Eirinn, the name given to the land of Ireland.

So in 1875 a football club was founded, by now the team were bringing talent from the West, but with little or no money the players in the West set a new team. This team were called Celtic, so with a promise of more cash and with more Irish people living in the West, the team of Hibernian lost the best players to the new team.

Oooh didn't I tell you, Aaah "Rude Boy" back in 16th, 17th, 18th centuries the Marshall Clan, having "failed" in a church test, were encouraged to leave or be burnt on a wooden post. So again they thought about being back in Ireland, where the soil was cheaper, meeting with those in boats that had names like "Dove", with white sails, but with the sea storms they held very Ill passengers, some got as far as Ireland others went on to longer trips such as Barbados and around the world.

Once again those who didn't want to follow a set trend of rules, were fearless in the scattered migration of the Marshall name.

Thunder & Lightning

On a fair but cloudy day in Dublin I was walking along the street on my way to O'Connell when I came across a little rain and as time was moving on I stopped for a while at the Irish National Gallery and had a snack.

In the cafe thinking about the visit to Croke Park where they had the Cluiche Ceannais na Toirni Agus na Tintri (Thunder and Lightning Final), as I had taken my food I looked around the gallery, famous old Irish people and artists but like a lightning strike I was hit by this one painting by F. Danby. The title of it was 'Sixth Seal'.

I stood for about an hour in total and just stared into the sight I was seeing. A vision so awesome looking, so dark and deep yet a line of light so bright caught my vision, as I moved with the flow of colour, was it the hope of a new dawn or the final thing people would see, like a banshee howl on the cart to take us away, the end of the show. Wow so thankful for the rain that fell that day of seeing something that will stay forever with me.

So that was another one over. A trip past the field with a croke then down to the point o2 be on the floor to hop, bop but I found the Irish surprise, shock secret – Yip the reason the sea does get rough, because of the Dublin rocks, to a pixie, fairy and a leprechaun. See told you only in Ireland.

Myths & Legends:

A Tale of Myth from the legend of the Celtic World

When the invaders from Spain, who have become known as ancestors of the present day Irish, arrived in the new land, three sisters greeted them and asked their advisor if they would they name the island after their sister Eriu, known as Erinn, they promised they would and named the land... Ireland after Erinn. Now the land had many warriors, brave men and women who after talks with the druids (who gave them powers) started fighting for the land.

The Fianna were responsible for the safety of the High King of Ireland, the warriors who roved over the land were gifted in arms and the arts, their leader was Finn MacCool. The Fianna were a fierce band of free warriors, to join the clan a man had to dig a hole, take a shield and a hazel stick in with them (could this be the first post hole for fencing?). If the man sustained no injury from the nine spears thrown at them they would be in the clan. They came to be known popularly as the Fenians, the Knights of the Round Table make reference to the exploits of the Fenians.

Finn was also known as Finn MacCumaill or Fionn MacCumal, he had great strength and wisdom which he acquired from one of his tutors the druid and poet Fingas. Fingas lived by the river Boyne, it is understood that on Nechtan's Hill there was a holy well with a source of knowledge. One day a woman called Boann violated the well, the water bubbled and swelled chasing her down the hill and so the river Boyne was formed, within the river Boyne was the Salmon of Knowledge.

As the legend goes, the druid gave up the Salmon of Knowledge which Finn cooked, while doing so he burnt his thumb on the flesh and sucked the burn to sooth his thumb. Fingas who had prophesied that a man named Fionn would benefit from the miraculous fish, gave the whole salmon to Finn to eat (is this why eating fish is good for us?). It is unclear where Finn is now, it has been told by some, that he fell trying to keep an uprising from the clan but some say that he is in a deep sleep within a cave waiting until Ireland needs him again.

Lir had four children, their stepmother turned them to swans and they had to endure cold and hunger in the icy waters, because of this myth I came across Lugh, known to be the father of Cuchulainn, the hero that took the place of the guard hound. Lugh was known for his many skills and his final claim to fame came in the shape of Irish folklore, known even today, he was the little stooping Lugh or Luchorpain which became Leprechaun. Cuchulainn was also a great fighter, when in battle a weary Cuchulainn showed his head it was blooded at the tips and on top (was this where the Irish got their red hair from?), as he was looking for his next fight a hoard of 150 women carrying cold water held him back, thus he was tamed and became a favourite with women (to his downfall later in life). His downfall came to Queen Medb and a curse from Macha.

I wrote these last words because I found the legend of Finn MacCool's son Oisin, Osin had the knowledge handed down by his father and the like Fingas was one of Irelands greatest poets. One day he met and became friends with Niam, and one day he and Niam flew away on a magic snow white steed, not wanting to be a warrior. Away Oisin found that he missed his homeland, Niam gave him her horse and told him not to dismount otherwise he would not be allowed to return to her, when Oisin arrived in Ireland he found it to be a cold land with small sad people, while helping these people to move a boulder his saddle slipped and he fell, when he got up his horse had vanished and he had become an old and frail man. He told this fantastic story, but only one man listened, that man was known as St Patrick.

On the 25th November 2005 Ireland lost a legend    G Best.
